Curriculum
In addition to the Montessori curriculum described on our Toddler House, Primary and Elementary pages, other special curricula and activities include the following.
Foreign Language
Our Spanish teacher offers regular lessons for students starting at the Primary level, and other languages can be explored as part of children’s cultural activities. Children engage their abilities to expand their language skills and in the process deepen and enrich their communication and thought processes about the world.
Music
Music is an important part of activities every week at CMS. In addition to music activities in the classrooms, Community Gathering on Friday mornings is a wonderful opportunity for students to sing and play instruments for the other children and teachers, as well as parents.
Art
Children enjoy daily opportunities to work on a variety of art projects as well as integrating their artistic creativity through their work with botany, zoology, geography, and all other academic subjects. Students' creative explorations are wonderful steps in the learning process and represent the Montessori approach to connect the child's work and creative expression in a meaningful way.
Physical Education
The elementary children take part in PE classes during the week in which they develop both physical abilities and co-operation in team games.
Movement Program
CMS offers an ongoing movement program on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday mornings from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Movement curriculum includes many aspects of the physical experience including large motor exercise, cooperation activities, creative and imaginative play and musical movement. The primary children can choose to go out to the commons for a half hour of movement when they wish, provided that there is a “Movement Card” available. Five children can leave each room at a time by putting their "Movement Card" in a pouch in the classroom before leaving. Our movement teacher, Amaya Egusquiza, records them as they enter and continues with her program.
World Studies
Children have many adventures throughout the year visiting countries around the world starting in the Primary program. These early experiences lead to meaningful connections and thinking about world cultural topics.
